Enhanced Energy-Saving Mechanisms in TSCH Networks for the IIoT: The PRIL Approach

Lifetime of motes in wireless sensor networks can be enlarged by decreasing the energy spent for communication. Approaches like time slotted channel hopping pursue this goal performing frame exchanges according to a predefined schedule, which helps reducing duty cycle. Unfortunately, whenever receiving radio interface is active but nobody network transmitting, idle listening occurs. If traffic pattern known advance, as relevant case periodic sensing, proactive reduction (PRIL) noticeably lowers waste disabling receivers when no frames are expected them. Optimal PRIL operation demands that, at any time, transmitter and receiver sides link have coherent view its state (either enabled or disabled). However, not ensured presence acknowledgment losses. An extensive experimental campaign has been carried out through discrete event simulation determine what consequences above errors may from both functional performance viewpoint.
